About halfway up Vernal Falls from the footbridge, the terrain becomes noticably steeper. From this point there are approximately 500 granite steps that lead to the top of the falls. This forms the bottom part of what is known as the Mist Trail. Though fairly dry this time of year, in the spring the spray coming off the falls soaks all who pass this way, giving the trail its name. Carrying 40 lb. packs, this was probably one of the most difficult parts of the hike.
