One of the longest tunnels collapsed not too long after it was built, resulting in the construction of the famous Goat Canyon Trestle. This is about as far as we went down this one!
This shorter tunnel bypasses the collapsed one, and leads to the Goat Canyon Trestle
Before we come around the bend to Goat Canyon you can see the large number of trestles that follow it as the tracks hug the side of Corrizo Gorge. Another sacrificial box car is seen on the right.
Looking up Goat Canyon, you can see the other end of the collapsed tunnel. It becomes apparent that it didn't just collapse but sheared right in half!
At last our first view of the Goat Canyon Trestle. At 250 ft. high and over 700 ft. across it is the largest wooden trestle bridge in the world!
Another view of the trestle. The abandoned tanker car on the far side gives you a sense of scale
